Christmas is upon us and with it comes snowy days, bundling up with warm knits and boots, listening to Christmas songs and decorating the house making it as cozy as possible. Christmas is my favourite time of year because I love the hustle and bustle in the shops, going for walks on brisk Winter afternoons and it has only just snowed here these past few days and I am so happy that it has finally arrived. It doesn’t feel like Christmas unless there is snow, now does it?
Christmas traditions were always a big thing for me growing up and they truly made this time of year magical. I look back and remember just how amazing it felt to set up the Christmas tree and decorate it with my mom while listening to holiday songs on the radio, visiting gift shows and picking out special gifts for my family members and there was even a time I got to open up a gift on Christmas Eve. That was pretty amazing.
Not only have traditions been extremely important for me, but they have also been for my fiance. He would have these huge Christmases with all of his extended family sitting around the table at breakfast eating crepes covered in peaches and whipped cream before opening gifts in front of the fireplace. I mean, does it really get any better than that?
My fiance and I brought our beautiful baby boy into the world in February of this year and we plan to carry on the traditions of our families while also making new ones of our own. I wanted to share some of the little things that we have planned and would love to hear what your Christmas traditions are.
Winter Family Photo Shoot
Winter is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque times of the year. The snow is falling, dusting the ground and trees, and it’s such a beautiful sight to see. Is there really anything better than fresh, untouched snow covering the ground? With that thought in mind, I plan on getting out the tripod, bundling up and heading outside for a little photo shoot of our little family. If you get out early enough, they would even make for beautiful Christmas cards to send to your loved ones!
Winter Sleigh Ride
I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember ever having been on a sleigh ride but I have always wanted to. After finding out that my family and I can go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride in the snow and afterward sit around an outdoor fire with hot chocolate I knew this was going to become a thing.
Photo with Santa
When I was younger, I always got my picture taken with Santa. My mom would dress me up in a nice outfit, we’d head over to the mall and get a quick snap and head off to Christmas shop. Over the years I’ve looked back at the photos from time to time and it put a smile on my face (not that there was always a smile on my face in the actual photo itself) and they are honestly just a nice photo to have and I want my son to have the same experience. Hopefully, his turn out better than most of mine because I did not have a cute cry face! I still don’t.
Cutting Down Our Own Christmas Tree
This is something my parents did with my brother and me for quite a few years and it’s something I want to include in our family as well. There is something so exciting about trudging out in the snow, setting out to find the perfect Christmas tree. It makes it feel much more special and I can’t wait to be able to dress up our tree with my little man and have him put the star on the top. And of course, the obligatory family photo in front of the said tree is a must!
I’d love to know if you have any family traditions, and if you’ve started a family of your own, which ones you will be carrying over and which ones you’ll be adding! I love hearing how others spend their holidays!
Wishing you all safe and happy holidays!
