    Finding Joy In The Little Things

    Enjoy the little things in life for some day you will look back and realize they were big things.

    I’m sure everyone has heard this saying at some point in their life, and while I understood the sentiment when I was younger, it means more to me now than it ever has. The saying grew with me and I find myself always wanting to enjoy those little moments and memories and hold on to them forever.

    Since becoming a momma, my days are always different and no two days are ever the same. They are busy, chaotic, stressful, beautiful, wonderful, fulfilling – I could go on. Being a mom changed so many things in my life and made me want to live my life just a little bit slower, with a little more mindfulness and really cherish the little moments as they come.

    The fact that my son is turning 17 months old in just a few days has my mind spinning. Where does the time go? Each morning I wake up and am amazed by how much my little man has grown just from the day before. Seeing him hit those milestones, picking up a new habit, trying to say a new word, his contagious laugh – these little things brighten up my entire day.

    So while it can be easy to get caught up in things that go wrong during the day, to feel consumed by work or the evergrowing things on your to-do list, just take a moment each day to think about the little things that made you grateful today. That is why I recently started a gratitude journal which I am excited to share with you soon and in an attempt to really love each day for what it is, I have come up with a few ways that I am going to do so.

    Be in the moment

    I have always been a person who likes to pick up their camera (and more conveniently now my iPhone) to snap pictures during the holidays, special occasions, or while my son is doing something silly and I am so concentrated on getting a great shot that I forget to stop and be in the moment. As much as it’s great to have a picture to look back on, I think it’s okay sometimes to just have that memory in your mind to think back on. I am going to try and be more present, enjoy the moment, and not always be looking through my camera lens.

    Gratitude journaling

    I touched a bit on this earlier, but I have really been enjoying gratitude journaling. There are so many things to be grateful for! Even though it may be hard at first, once you truly bring gratefulness into your life it gets much easier to see little things that you once overlooked that make you truly happy. There is something beautiful in every day, you just have to be looking for it.

    Get outside more

    As a stay at home mom, much of my day is spent running around after my energetic toddler and before I know it the day is done. It can be really easy to forget how important it is to get outside and smell the roses, as they say. Recently, I went on an amazing trip to Algonquin and it was so beautiful and peaceful and being outside for those few days really helped to clear my mind a bit. I plan on heading outdoors more often!

    Self-care

    I plan to make the time and effort when I can to practice more self-care because as much as I love looking after my little family, I need to look after myself too. To be honest, most of the time I feel guilty for wanting to take some time for myself, and it’s something I personally struggle with. Now that I am a mom, there are so many things that I feel I need to be doing or taking care of, and learning to stop and leave some unticked boxes on the to-do list is totally okay. At the end of the day, my world isn’t going to end if I forget to put a load of laundry on.
